1A. SOLAR SUMMARY
Activity 23 Oct: R0
Flares: none.
Observed 10.7 cm flux/Equivalent Sunspot Number for 23 Oct: 101/49
1B. SOLAR FORECAST

Activity R0 R0 R0
Fadeouts None expected None expected None expected
10.7cm/SSN 100/48 95/41 95/41
COMMENT: Solar flare activity on UT day 23-Oct was at the R0
level, with several low-level C-class flares observed. There
are currently two numbered sunspot regions visible on the solar
disk and one unnumbered region. Active Region (AR) 4560 (N13W52,
beta) is the largest region on the disk and has shown decay over
the UT day, particularly in its intermediate spots. Region 4557
(N06W79, beta) is currently rotating over the western limb. An
unnumbered region recently appeared near S19W01 (beta) and has
exhibited mild spot growth. Solar flare activity is expected
to be at the R0 level over 24-26 Oct. S0 solar radiation storm
conditions were observed on UT day 23-Oct. S0 solar radiation
storm conditions are expected over 24-26 Oct. No Earth-directed
coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been observed. The solar wind
speed on UT day 23-Oct was mostly stable, ranging between 410
and 470 km/s, and is currently near 415 km/s. The peak total
interplanetary magnetic field strength (IMF, Bt) was 7 nT and
the north-south IMF component (Bz) ranged between -6 to +7 nT.
The solar wind speed is expected to decrease toward background
levels over 24-26 Oct, although a mild enhancement may occur
on 25-Oct due to a possible glancing impact from a CME first
observed on 21-Oct.

Pc3 pulsations are high frequency (10-45 second period) variations
of the Earths magnetic field. Daily pc3-indices are the daily sum
of 20 minute pc3-indices for that station and have been shown to be
well correlated with rejection of high resolution aeromagnetic
survey flight-line data.
NOTE: Indices may have been generated from data obtained in
cooperation with the following organisations: Geoscience Australia,
University of Newcastle Space Physics Group, Australian Government
Antarctic Division and International Center for Space Weather
Science and Education, Japan.

2B. MAGNETIC FORECAST
Date Ap Conditions
24 Oct 10 G0
25 Oct 16 G0
26 Oct 10 G0
COMMENT: G0 geomagnetic conditions were observed in the Australian
region and at the planetary level on UT day 23-Oct. Mostly G0
geomagnetic conditions were observed in the Antarctic region,
with an isolated period of G2 observed at Mawson. G0 planetary
geomagnetic conditions are expected over 24-26 Oct.

24 Oct Normal-fair Normal-fair Normal-fair
25 Oct Normal Normal-fair Fair
26 Oct Normal Normal Normal-fair
COMMENT: Global high-frequency (HF) radio propagation conditions
were mostly fair over UT day 23-Oct. Degraded conditions were
observed particularly in northern hemisphere regions. HF conditions
are forecast to be normal to fair over 24-25 Oct, and mostly
normal on 26-Oct.

Date T index MUFs
24 Oct 30 Depressed 15%/near predicted monthly values
25 Oct 45 Near predicted monthly values
26 Oct 50 Near predicted monthly values
COMMENT: Maximum Usable Frequencies (MUFs) on UT day 23-Oct in
northern Australia were near predicted monthly values, with 15%
depressions observed during local day. MUFs in southern Australia
were depressed by 25-30%. Sporadic E was observed at Townsville.
Spread F was observed at Hobart, Perth and Canberra during local
night hours. MUFs are forecast to be near predicted monthly values
to 15% depressed on 24-Oct. MUFs are expected to be near predicted
monthly values over 25-26 Oct, with mild depressions possible
on 25-Oct due to potential geomagnetic activity.
