SUBJ: ASWFC WEEKLY GEOPHYSICAL REPORT
ISSUED ON 09 JANUARY 2025
FROM THE AUSTRALIAN SPACE WEATHER FORECASTING CENTRE
ASWAS SCALE DESCRIPTION: https://bit.ly/3lmaMBx

1. SUMMARY (31 DECEMBER - 08 JANUARY)
K indices are in UT (0-24). For conversion to local time:

AEST = UT + 10 hours; ACST = UT + 9.5 hours; AWST = UT + 8 hours
        Australian Region*
 Date K-INDICES A
 31 Dec 1222 1533 13 In the BOM magnetometer data for 31
Dec, a weak (15nT) impulse was observed
                          at 1621UT.
 01 Jan 3555 6763 59 In the BOM magnetometer data for 01
Jan, a weak (18nT) impulse was observed
                          at 0308UT.

*estimated from real time data

NOTE: Indices may have been generated from data obtained in
cooperation with the following organisations: Geoscience Australia,
University of Newcastle Space Physics Group, Australian Government
Antarctic Division and International Center for Space Weather
Science and Education, Japan.

G3 geomagnetic conditions were observed in the Australian region on
01-Jan due to a CME arrival. Planetary geomagnetic conditions reached
G4 on this day. G1 geomagnetic conditions were observed on 31-Dec, 02-
Jan and 04-Jan. G0 geomagnetic conditions were observed on all other days.

2. FORECAST (09 JANUARY - 08 FEBRUARY)
Disturbed Periods:
No strong recurrent patterns, however mild activity may be experienced on:
 12-20 Jan, 27 Jan, 29 Jan, 31 Jan to 3 Feb.

Best Quiet Periods:
 9-11 Jan, 21-26 Jan, 30 Jan, 4 Feb.

3. FORECAST FOR HIGH RESOLUTION AEROMAGNETIC SURVEYS
Northern Australian Regions:
 Disturbed Periods: None.
Best Quiet Periods: 9 Jan to 8 Feb.

Central Australian Regions:
Mildly Disturbed Periods: 13-14 Jan, 17-20 Jan, 28-29 Jan, 31 Jan to 03 Feb.
Best Quiet Periods: 9-11 Jan, 22-26 Jan, 5-7 Feb.

Southern Australian Regions:
Disturbed Periods: 13-14 Jan, 17-20 Jan, 28-29 Jan, 31 Jan to 03 Feb.
Best Quiet Periods: 9-11 Jan, 22-26 Jan, 5-7 Feb.

Pc3 pulsations are high frequency (10-45 second period) variations
of the Earths magnetic field. Daily pc3-indices are the daily sum of
20 minute pc3-indices for that station and have been shown to be well
correlated with rejection of high resolution aeromagnetic survey
flight-line data.

PLEASE NOTE:
Geomagnetic activity can frequently be determined by short timescale
solar events that cannot be forecast a week in advance, particularly
at solar maximum.
