Solar activity was at low levels on UT day 1 January. Similar levels
of solar activity may be expected on 2 January. As anticipated, the
effect of the CME observed on 28 December, kept the solar wind stream
relatively stronger with solar wind speed up to ~460 km/s and
sustained periods of negative Bz, resulting in enhanced geomagnetic
activity to minor storm levels. As a result beautiful and exciting
auroras were observed and reported. Quiet to active levels of
geomagnetic activity may be expected on 2 January. The enhanced
geomagnetic activity also resulted in minor to significant
degradations to HF conditions and MUF depressions on 1 January. Minor
to mild degradations in HF conditions and depressions in MUFs may be
expected on 2 January due to expected continued rise in geomagnetic
activity levels on this day.
