There is a large well defined circular sunspot located at low latitude
in the northern hemisphere. This sunspot is visible to the fully
protected human eye without a telescope. However, this region is
magnetically stable and not very active. Four C-class solar flares
occurred during the previous 24 hours, the largest being a C6.4 event
peaking at 17:22 UT on 20 Nov. At this stage, none of the CMEs
associated with these flares are expected to impact Earth. The solar
wind speed has been light (350-400 km/s) and is expected to remain
light. Geomagnetic conditions are expected to remain quiet during the
next 48 hours. Ionospheric support for HF radio communication has been
strongly enhanced at most stations, and is expected to remain strongly
enhanced in coming days. The ionospheric support was also strongly
enhanced on 20 Nov during the years 2011 and 2012. This implies a
seasonal thermospheric response to elevated solar UV flux levels
throughout the current solar maximum. HF communicators should take
advantage of the exceptional conditions whilst they last.
