About Ips-esws-general | |
Under severe space weather conditions there is an increased risk of impacts to critical infrastructure such as power networks, GPS navigation and timing systems, HF radio communications, and satellite systems. "Severe space weather WATCH" messages are issued when an event has occurred on the sun with characteristics typical of previous events that have resulted in severe space weather. The assessment of severity of a given solar disturbance is based on the interpretation of the Duty Forecast Officer, being informed by both remote observation of the Sun and statistical modelling of the event (for more details of the statistical model please contact ASWFC@bom.gov.au). These messages should therefore be considered as advisory notifications for possible severe space weather conditions.
