Dear Colleagues,
Abstract submission has now opened for this year's Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting (WPGM), which is to be held at the Cairns Convention Centre, Queensland, Australia (July 29th - August 1st).

We would like to invite colleagues to submit abstracts to the session SP04: 'Interplanetary Transients and their Large-Scale Magnetospheric Effects'. Full details of the session are given below. For further details about the conference, or to submit abstracts, please visit http://www.agu.org/meetings/wp08. The abstract deadline is the 16th of April, 2008.

Regards,
Steve Morley and Alexis Rouillard

SP04: Interplanetary Transients and their Large-Scale Magnetospheric Effects

Interplanetary coronal mass ejections, corotating interaction regions and the subsequent high-speed solar wind streams (collectively, interplanetary transients) are responsible for intense, and often prolonged, driving of the coupled solar wind-magnetosphere system. Through the declining phase of solar cycle 23 a large effort has gone towards understanding the geospace effects resulting from corotating interaction regions and the high-speed streams associated with them. New multipoint measurements (e.g. from STEREO) will now also allow unprecedented insight into the geospace effects of CMEs and other interplanetary transients.

The primary focus of this session is the understanding of interplanetary transients and their large-scale coupling to planetary magnetospheres, particularly that of Earth. Questions regarding what determines the coupling efficiency are still open, as are the origins of the different modes of magnetospheric response. While papers addressing all aspects of interplanetary transients are solicited, those assessing the large-scale coupling of interplanetary transients to magnetospheres will be especially welcome.
