Solar activity is expected to be at the R0-R1 level for 24-Mar. The
solar wind speed has been moderate, however a gradual increase in the
solar wind total magnetic field strength together with an increasing
southward drift of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz
component has been observed. The IMF Bz has remained steadily
southward from 23/1700UT. Geomagnetic activity in the Australian
region has unexpectedly reached ASWAS G2 level overnight. The
planetary Kp has reached G3 for one Kp period. Due to the sustained
southward IMF orientation further G1-G2 periods are likely early in
the UT day 24-Mar, with the chance of an isolated G3 period. The
southern Australian region ionosphere is currently depressed 20% after
dawn this morning, with degraded HF communication conditions. The
northern Australian region ionosphere is currently near to 40%
enhanced.
