[ips-sf] IPS Summary Forecast for 18 March - issued 0004UT/18-Mar-2015

rwc rwc at ips.gov.au
Wed Mar 18 11:04:24 EST 2015

Solar flare activity on 17-Mar was low, though moderate activity is
likely for the next 3 days. An earlier than expected arrival of the
15-Mar CME has resulted in the solar wind increasing along with
increased interplanetary magnetic field strength. Geomagnetic
conditions reached major storm levels across the Australian region and
are expected to persist during 18-Mar. Short-wave radio fadeouts and
proton events are possible. Significantly depressed maximum useable
frequencies were experienced, and HF radio communications are likely
to be poor on 18-Mar. Aurora sightings on 17-Mar have been reported as
far north as Kiama on the NSW coast. Further sightings are possible on
18-Mar (local nighttime) from southern Australian regions.
