SUBJ: IPS DAILY SOLAR AND GEOPHYSICAL REPORT
ISSUED AT 25/2330Z DECEMBER 2011 BY IPS RADIO AND SPACE SERVICES
FROM THE AUSTRALIAN SPACE FORECAST CENTRE
SUMMARY FOR 25 DECEMBER AND FORECAST FOR 26 DECEMBER - 28 DECEMBER
STATUS INDICATORS SOL:** YELLOW ** MAG:** RED ** ION: GREEN
-----------------------------------------------------------
1A. SOLAR SUMMARY

Observed 10.7 cm flux/Equivalent Sunspot Number for 25 Dec: 144/98

1B. SOLAR FORECAST
             26 Dec 27 Dec 28 Dec
Activity Moderate Moderate Moderate
Fadeouts Possible Possible Possible
10.7cm/SSN 150/105 155/109 155/109

COMMENT: Solar Activity was Moderate with newly emerged region
1387(S22W28) producing an M4 flare at 1816UT followed by a C7
at 2029UT. The M flare had a type II radio burst associated with
it with an estimated shock speed of around 1000km/s. Coronagraph
imagery from LASCO is not available. STEREO-A shows a large ejected
plasma cloud across the ecliptic. Combined with the location
of the flaring region this suggests the event will be geo-effective.
Further analysis will be made if more imagery from LASCO becomes
available. Solar activity is expected to be moderate for the
next 3 days due to region 1387. Solar wind conditions were normal
over the last day.

Observed Regional daily pc3 Indices 25 Dec :
      Darwin 0 (Quiet)
      Townsville 0 (Quiet)

      Canberra 0 (Quiet)
      Hobart 0 (Quiet)

Pc3 pulsations are high frequency (10-45 second period) variations
of the Earths magnetic field. Daily pc3-indices are the daily sum
of 20 minute pc3-indices for that station and have been shown to be
well correlated with rejection of high resolution aeromagnetic
survey flight-line data.

NOTE: Indices may have been generated from data obtained in
cooperation with the following organisations: Geoscience Australia,
University of Newcastle Space Physics Group, Australian Government
Antarctic Division and Space Environment Research Center, Japan.

COMMENT: IPS Geomagnetic Warning 25 was issued on 22 December
and is current for interval 25-26 December. Geomagnetic conditions
are expected to be Quiet for the next 2 days. A potential strike
from a CME on the 28th may cause Active conditions with possible
isolated minor storms. Characterisation of this event is not
yet complete due to missing data at time of writing. Further
information will be given when this becomes available.

Predicted Monthly T index for December: 71

4B. AUSTRALIAN REGION IONOSPHERIC FORECAST
Date T index MUFs
26 Dec 140 Near predicted monthly values to 20% enhanced.
27 Dec 140 Near predicted monthly values to 20% enhanced.
28 Dec 90 Near predicted monthly values

COMMENT: Normal to enhanced by up to 20% MUFs are expected for
the next 2 days. On day 3, MUFs may be reduced to around predicted
monthly values, with some chance of depressions, due to possible
geomagnetic activity.
