SUBJ: IPS DAILY SOLAR AND GEOPHYSICAL REPORT
ISSUED AT 11/2330Z OCTOBER 2001 BY IPS RADIO AND SPACE SERVICES
FROM THE AUSTRALIAN SPACE FORECAST CENTRE
SUMMARY FOR 11 OCTOBER AND FORECAST FOR 12 OCTOBER - 14 OCTOBER
STATUS INDICATORS SOL:** YELLOW ** MAG:** YELLOW ** ION: GREEN
-----------------------------------------------------------
1A. SOLAR SUMMARY
Activity 11 Oct: Low

Flares: none.

Observed 10.7 cm flux/Equivalent Sunspot Number for 11 Oct: 175/129

1B. SOLAR FORECAST
             12 Oct 13 Oct 14 Oct
Activity Low to moderate Low to moderate Low to moderate
Fadeouts Possible Possible Possible
10.7cm/SSN 170/124 170/124 170/124

COMMENT: A strong shock was observed in the solar wind at 1619UT on 11
Oct. The north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic
field fluctuated southward on shock arrival, then turned strongly
northward, reducing geoeffectiveness. Solar wind speed currently
moderately elevated at around 550km/sec.

      Hobart 7 2221 31--

Observed Regional daily pc3 Indices 11 OCT :
      Darwin NA
      Townsville NA
      Learmonth 0 (Quiet)
      Canberra NA
      Hobart NA
Pc3 pulsations are high frequency (10-45 second period) variations
of the Earths magnetic field. Daily pc3 indices are the daily sum
of 20 minute pc3 indices for that station.

2B. MAGNETIC FORECAST
Date Ap Conditions
12 Oct 18 Active
13 Oct 13 Active declining to unsettled
14 Oct 13 Quiet to Unsettled
COMMENT: IPS Geomagnetic Warning 38 was issued on 9 October and
is current for interval 11-13 October. A weak (40nT) impulse was
observed in the IPS magnetomter data at 1701UT on 11 Oct.
Geomagnetic activity following impulse is expected to rapidly
decline today due to strongly northward IMF. There may be some
further isolated periods of activity around local midnight tonight.
