ASWFC Proton Alerts provide notification of the occurrence of a proton event. A proton event is issued when the 10Mev energy protons exceed the ASWAS S1 to S5 thresholds. In addition 100MeV and 500MeV alerts are issued when the proton flux exceeds 1PFU. Proton flux measurments are obtained from the US Space Weather Prediction Centre. They are from the GOES family of satellites. This is an automatic product, the proton flux values are heavily smoothed before determining event begin and end times, the data smoothing will widen the actual begin and end times. The smoothing is done to prevent multiple begin/end alerts being issued as flux values fluctuate near event thresholds.
