A student workshop aimed at providing students with hands-on experience in
designing and running experiments at the new Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter
Radar (PFISR) will be held at the MIT Haystack Observatory July 7-11, 2008.
Details are at www.haystack.mit.edu/edu/workshop . This workshop is
anticipated to be the first of several student workshops aimed at teaching
the new generation of scientists how to request and analyze incoherent
scatter radar experiments. All students will have the opportunity to work
one-on-one with an experienced scientist. The workshop will be structured to
provide presentations in the morning, and hands-on experience in experiment
design and analysis in the afternoons.
The morning lectures will include an introduction to the theory of
incoherent scatter, radar operations, ISR analysis techniques, and the
Madrigal data base. The afternoon exercises will involve working closely
with Upper Atmospheric Facility (UAF) staff in the topic areas of:
proposal design, experiment execution, and data analysis.
This workshop is suitable for graduate and advanced undergraduate students.
The workshop is sponsored by the National Science Foundation through its
Upper Atmospheric Facility Program within the Geosciences Directorate.
Attendance is limited to 16 students and their advisors. For students within
the U.S., travel, housing and most meals will be provided. For students
outside of the U.S., travel is not included. *The deadline for application
submission is 31 March 2008.
