Dear Customer,

As a solar wind shock alert customer you may be aware that the US ACE
solar wind monitoring satellite detector is vunerable to proton events.
During strong proton events solar wind data from the ACE satellite
becomes unrealistic. Typically, solar wind density increases to
unrealistic levels, whilst solar wind speed decreases to unrealistic levels.

Recently IPS has developed a sudden impulse alert service. This alert
will detect sudden impuleses in the Earth's geomagnetic field. Typically,
an impulse is observed about 40minutes after the ACE satellite observes a
shock in the solar wind. The impulse is the signature of the shock in the Earth's
geomagnetic field. Ideally, the alert sequence from IPS would be: precursor
alert, solar wind shock alert, impulse alert, then K index/Auroral alert.

The sudden impulse alert could provide coverage when the ACE satellite is
blind due to strong proton events. This alert, (and any other email alert)
can be subscribe to at no charge from the IPS web site. the precursor
alert can provide an indication that the shock is coming in the solar
wind, if ACE has not been blinded.
