Tue May 17 09:39:12 EST 2016
Solar flare activity was low (C class flares) during 16 May UT and it
is expected to remain low during the next 2 days. The strong Coronal
Mass Ejection (CME) launched in association with the long duration C
class flare on 15 May is not Earthward directed. The CME is
propagating toward the west (ahead of Earth in its orbit). At best, it
will deliver a glancing blow at Earth late on 18 May UT. Geomagnetic
conditions are expected to be quiet to unsettled during 17 May and
they may reach active levels during 18-19 May if the CME impacts
Earth. The solar wind speed is currently about 500 km/s. Conditions
for HF radio wave propagation are trending back towards near normal in
the Southern Hemisphere. However, intervals of depressed conditions
are still likely at low latitude stations.
