Visually, the Sun remains spectacular today, displaying numerous large
sunspots, filaments and prominences characteristic of “solar max”.
GONG H alpha images show a large solar prominence arching on the WSW
limb. Big Bear H alpha images recorded the lift-off of a large
prominence during 15 to 17 UT, accelerating rapidly during 17 UT. The
ejecta appeared to head east in the H alpha images, and the available
SOHO LASCO and STEREO coronograms show a strong CME heading toward the
NE during 21 UT. AR 2113 produced the largest flare of the day, an
M1.2 event peaking at 00:26 UT. Very large Active Regions 2108 and
2109 only managed to produced a single weak C class X-ray flare during
9 July. At the time of this report, no strong CMEs are expected to
impact the Earth's geomagnetic field. The solar wind speed at Earth
has been light at about 360 km/s, and geomagnetic conditions are
expected to remain quiet during the next 48 hours. Conditions for HF
radio propagation in the Australian region were mildly depressed at
tropical latitudes and mildly enhanced at mid latitudes during 9
July.
