Sun Nov 24 10:32:30 EST 2013
Solar activity was moderate during 23 Nov. The newly named Active
Region (AR) 1904 released two weak M class solar flares and there were
also eight C-class solar flares in the range C1.5 to C5.4. AR 1904 is
located just north of AR 1899, a large well-defined but low activity
sunspot region located close to the western limb. Hence yesterday’s
M-class solar activity is unlikely to be geoeffective. A four hour
interval of Bz southward conditions caused a very minor geomagnetic
storm over night. The preliminary Australian region Dst index
decreased to -42 nT at 12 UT. Although this was a very weak storm, the
favourable timing, 10 pm AEST, meant that auroras may have been
visible low on the horizon from dark sky locations in Tasmania. Solar
activity is expected to remain low to moderate during 24-26 Nov. The
solar wind conditions are expected to remain light today, and
geomagnetic conditions are expected to remain quiet to unsettled. The
unusually strong support for HF radio communication during the past
week is showing signs of softening today.
