A strong shock in the solar wind was observed at around 0530UT on the
16th March due to the arrival of a coronal mass ejection (CME). The
enhanced wind speed, density and magnetic field carried in the solar
wind caused a minor to major geomagnetic storm which is ongoing,
although the intensity has dropped to Active levels. Due to this
storm, Aurora were visible from Tasmania after around 9:30pm local
time for several hours. The ionospheric response to this storm has
been strong and conditions for HF radio propagation are poor with
significantly reduced maximum useable frequency.
