2.1 Comments on Solar Activity.
Solar activity was at moderate to high levels this month.
High activity was observed during the second half of the
month. A total of 36 xray flares were observed, 32 M class events
and 4 X class events. Solar regions 9661 and 9672 each produced
two X1 class events. The very large solar region, 9682,
currently just west of the centre of the solar disk,
contributed several M class flares to this month's
activity.

3. GEOMAGNETIC DISTURBANCES (for Australian Region)
DATE COMMENTS
1-2 Oct 01: Minor and major storm periods, following sudden impulses on
29 and 30 Sep.
3 Oct 01: Major Storm, following weak sudden impulse of 24nT 0844UT.
11 Oct 01: Active, following weak sudden impulse of 40nT 1701UT.
12 Oct 01: Minor Storm, following weak sudden impulse of 29nT 0240UT.
21 Oct 01: Major storm levels late in UT day, following moderate
sudden impulse of 52nT at 1648UT.
22-23 Oct 01: Major-Severe Storm levels, following impulse on 21 Oct
and another possible sudden impulse of 38nT at 0851UT.
25 Oct 01: Isolated active period with a weak sudden impulse of 38nT
observed 0851UT. No significant activity followed impulse.
28 Oct 01: Major Storm, following moderate sudden impulse of 61nT
at 0319UT.
31 Oct 01: Active periods, weak sudden impulse of 17nT observed
at 1349UT.
Most of the disturbed days this month were associated with
coronal mass ejections. The strongest disturbance for the
month was observed on 22 Oct with a local A index of 61.
