An aurora was seen from a relatively light-secluded location at 46 deg 08
min S, 170 deg 28 min E, in the
Lookout Point suburb of Dunedin City, New Zealand, between 2340 and 0040
local time (1040UT and 1140UT, 29 October 2003). For the first half hour,
the display consisted of two static bands of dull greenish white light, at
35-45 degrees and 20-25 degrees respectively above the south horizon.
These bands then brightened and beams of light developed, converging
towards the zenith from the south quarter. The two bands of light merged
into a single zone of brighter greenish white light, with multiple beams
passing through this zone to the zenith. No shimmering was seen. Within
2 minutes of the end of the display, there were faint 1 second pulses of
diffuse sheets of dull greenish white light shooting across the now-fading
beams in a zone between 30 and 40 degrees above the south horizon. After
this, in the space of two minutes, the beams and the background glow faded
back to a dull glow about 10 degrees above the south horizon.
