Location: Kingston, southern Tasmania (latitude about 43 S)
Date: 17/18 Nov 2003
Time: approx 10 pm (17th Nov) - 01 am (18th Nov) local civil summer time, i.e. 11 - 14 UT, 17 Nov.
Sky: mostly clear

A faint diffuse glow was seen low on the southern horizon at about 11 UT 17 Nov. Some scattered cloud in that direction made positive identification difficult at that time.

By 14 UT the Southern sky appeared clear. A distinct but faint glow was visible, showing changes in form over a few minutes. A green tinge was also apparent. Some structure was seen in the glow at about 14:20 UT, taking the form of 2 broad rays, and confirming it as an aurora. Looking through binoculars, the lower border appeared within 5 degrees of the S horizon. At maximum the glow was about 10 to 15 degrees above the horizon.
