SUBJ: SWS AURORA WATCH
ISSUED AT 0538 UT ON 22 Feb 2021 by Space Weather Services
FROM THE AUSTRALIAN SPACE FORECAST CENTRE
A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) was observed starting at 1130 UTC
on 20 February. This CME was triggered by a long disappearing
filament from the south-east solar quadrant with extension towards
the solar centre. Our model run indicates that the effect of
this CME will be felt at the Earth between 00 - 12 UT on UT day
23 February. The impact of the CME can range from a glancing
blow to a large proportion of the CME hitting the earth. Expected
geomagnetic disturbances are likely to be active with a chance
of G1 storming. Aurora may be visible from Tasmania and Southern parts
of Victoria. Aurora alerts will follow if significant geomagnetic
activity actually occurs.
