Dear Subscriber,
This message is to provide an update on recent changes to the Aurora
Alert messages in response to customer feedback. Some new aurora notices
have been added to this distribution list and some existing messages
modified.
Aurora Alerts:
These messages will continue to be distributed through this list. These
messages are issued when space weather activity favourable for viewing
aurora is in progress. In the main body of this message, some example
place names have been added for high, middle, low and equatorial
latitude bands to help identify with these regions. The email address
link for reporting observed aurora has been modified within the body of
this message.
Aurora Watch:
These are new messages that will be distributed through this list. These
are effectively warning messages with lead times of hours to a couple of
days. These messages will only be issued in response to a significant
solar Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) being observed as earthward directed
and likely to be geo-effective. Aurora alerts will follow should
favourable space weather activity eventuate.
Aurora Outlook:
These are new messages that will be distributed through this list. These
are effectively warning messages with lead times of days to weeks. These
messages will be issued in response to the presence of a large active
solar region rotating into a position that is favourable for CMEs and
possible auroral activity. Solar regions that maintain high levels of
solar flare activity for sustained periods of days to weeks are rare.
Consequently, these messages are only likely to be issued on rare
occasions. Watch and/or alert messages will follow should a
geo-effective CME be observed and/or significant geomagnetic activity
eventuate.
Aurora Reports:
Reports of visible aurora will now be managed using an email
distribution list:
http://listserver.ips.gov.au/mailman/listinfo/ips-aurora-sightings
This email list provides access to reports of visible aurora submitted
to IPS by the general public. These reports may be accessed as archives
of previous reports or forwarded directly onto subscribers. Submissions
to this list are moderated for appropriate content before approval to
subscribers and the archives. Please do not include any personal details
you are not comfortable being viewed by the general public as the
archive will be available through a link on the website. Reports of
aurora (including photos) should now be sent to:
ips-aurora-sightings at ips.gov.au
