<P ALIGN=LEFT><SPAN LANG="en-au"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">and optical instruments during the last decade has allowed us to better visualize the dynamic</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><SPAN LANG="en-au"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">nature of various ionospheric phenomena with improved spatial and temporal resolution. For</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><SPAN LANG="en-au"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">example, recent extension of the SuperDARN network to both lower and higher latitudes has</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><SPAN LANG="en-au"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">shown that the polar cap and mid-latitude ionosphere are much more active than we ever</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><SPAN LANG="en-au"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">thought. In addition, there are several on-going ground-based and satellite (IMAGE, Cluster,</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><SPAN LANG="en-au"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">THEMIS, REIMEI etc.) collaborations aimed at understanding the electromagnetic coupling</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><SPAN LANG="en-au"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">between magnetospheric processes and ionospheric disturbances. This session addresses</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><SPAN LANG="en-au"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">ground-based and satellite observations and data analysis as well as modeling approaches and</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><SPAN LANG="en-au"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">theories of dynamics and structures in the high- and mid-latitude ionosphere, in terms of</FONT></SPAN></P>
