SUBJ: ASWFC WEEKLY GEOPHYSICAL REPORT
ISSUED ON 10 AUGUST 2023
FROM THE AUSTRALIAN SPACE WEATHER FORECASTING CENTRE
ASWAS SCALE DESCRIPTION: https://bit.ly/3lmaMBx

1. SUMMARY (01 AUGUST - 09 AUGUST)
K indices are in UT (0-24). For conversion to local time:

AEST = UT + 10 hours; ACST = UT + 9.5 hours; AWST = UT + 8 hours
        Australian Region*
 Date K-INDICES A

Aug, a weak (15nT) impulse was observed
                          at 0254UT.

*estimated from real time data

NOTE: Indices may have been generated from data obtained in
cooperation with the following organisations: Geoscience Australia,
University of Newcastle Space Physics Group, Australian Government
Antarctic Division and International Center for Space Weather
Science and Education, Japan.

G0 geomagnetic conditions were observed for the majority of the
week, with a period of G1 observed on 5-Aug due to a CME impact.

2. FORECAST (10 AUGUST - 09 SEPTEMBER)
Disturbed Periods:
No strong recurrent patterns, however mild activity may be experienced on:
 12-14 Aug, 8-9 Sep.

Best Quiet Periods:
 16-31 Aug, 1-6 Sep

Note that the majority of geomagnetic activity of late has been
driven by CME impacts rather than coronal hole effects. CME
impacts are impossible to forecast on the monthly scale as they
can only be analysed once an ejection from the sun is observed.
Due to the high amount of CME impacts recently there is a risk
of further impacts over Aug-Sep.

3. FORECAST FOR HIGH RESOLUTION AEROMAGNETIC SURVEYS
Northern Australian Regions: NA

Central Australian Regions: NA

Southern Australian Regions:
 Disturbed Periods: None.
Best Quiet Periods: 10-15 Aug, 17-21 Aug, 24 Aug to 5 Sep.

Pc3 pulsations are high frequency (10-45 second period) variations
of the Earths magnetic field. Daily pc3-indices are the daily sum of
20 minute pc3-indices for that station and have been shown to be well
correlated with rejection of high resolution aeromagnetic survey
flight-line data.

PLEASE NOTE:
Geomagnetic activity can frequently be determined by short timescale
solar events that cannot be forecast a week in advance, particularly
at solar maximum.
