SUBJ: IPS WEEKLY GEOPHYSICAL REPORT
ISSUED ON 01 MARCH 2012, BY IPS RADIO AND SPACE SERVICES,
FROM THE AUSTRALIAN SPACE FORECAST CENTRE
1. SUMMARY (21 FEBRUARY - 29 FEBRUARY)
K indices are in UT (0-24). For conversion to local time:
AEST = UT + 10 hours; ACST = UT + 9.5 hours; AWST = UT + 8 hours
Australian Region*
Date K-INDICES A
21 Feb 2222 1212 6
22 Feb 3232 3122 9 In the IPS magnetometer data for 22 Feb, a weak
(12nT) impulse
was observed at 0217UT.
23 Feb 1112 1112 4
24 Feb 2212 2212 6

*estimated from real time data
NOTE: Indices may have been generated from data obtained in
cooperation with the following organisations: Geoscience Australia,
University of Newcastle Space Physics Group, Australian Government
Antarctic Division and Space Environment Research Center, Japan.
Mostly quiet to unsettled. A weak impulse (12 nT) was observed at 0217 UT/22 Feb
in the IPS
magnetometer data. Active to minor storm conditions in the latter half of 27 Feb
and active
conditions until 09 UT half of 28 Feb.
2. FORECAST (01 MARCH - 31 MARCH)
Disturbed Periods:
No strong recurrent patterns, however mild activity may be experienced on:
2 Mar, 4-5 Mar, 11 Mar, 17-18 Mar, 29 Mar.
Best Quiet Periods:
1 Mar, 6-10 Mar, 13-15 Mar, 19-28 Mar, 30-31 Mar.
3. FORECAST FOR HIGH RESOLUTION AEROMAGNETIC SURVEYS (01 MARCH - 31 MARCH)
Northern Australian Regions:
Disturbed Periods: None.
Best Quiet Periods: 1-31 Mar.
Central Australian Regions:
Mildly Disturbed Periods: 17-18 Mar.
Best Quiet Periods: 1-16 Mar, 21-31 Mar.
Southern Australian Regions:
Disturbed Periods: 17-18 Mar.
Best Quiet Periods: 1-16 Mar, 21-31 Mar.
Pc3 pulsations are high frequency (10-45 second period) variations
of the Earths magnetic field. Daily pc3-indices are the daily sum of
20 minute pc3-indices for that station and have been shown to be well
correlated with rejection of high resolution aeromagnetic survey
flight-line data.
PLEASE NOTE:
Geomagnetic activity can frequently be determined by short timescale
solar events that cannot be forecast a week in advance, particularly
at solar maximum.
