SUBJ: IPS WEEKLY GEOPHYSICAL REPORT
ISSUED ON 18 APRIL 2002, BY IPS RADIO AND SPACE SERVICES,
FROM THE AUSTRALIAN SPACE FORECAST CENTRE

1. SUMMARY (09 APRIL - 17 APRIL)
K indices are in UT (0-24). For conversion to local time:
AEST = UT + 10 hours; ACST = UT + 9.5 hours; AWST = UT + 8 hours

in the IPS magnetomter data at 1107UT on 17 Apr.

*estimated from real time data

Two 'halo' CMEs were observed during this period, one on
15 April and the other one on 17 April. The first CME has
already affected the geomagnetic activity and raised it
to major storm level on 17April. The second CME is expected
to hit the earth on 19 April (late hours) or 20 April
(early hours). The geomagnetic activity is expected to rise
upto minor storm level on the arrival of this CME.
The >10MeV proton event, that started on 17 April, ended at
0050 UT on 18 April.

2. FORECAST (18 APRIL - 18 MAY)
Disturbed Periods:
18-20 April, 26-30 April, 8-11 May
Best Quiet Periods:
23-25 April, 1-7 May

PEASE NOTE:
At this time of the solar cycle, space weather conditions
are frequently determined by short timescale events, not
able to be forecasted a week in advance.
