[ips-sf] IPS Summary Forecast for 24 December - issued 2346UT/23-Dec-2015 [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

Thu Dec 24 10:46:56 EST 2015

Solar activity during the past 24 hours was at moderate levels with a
strong M4.7 flare and few weak C-class flares. The outlook for the
next 24 hrs is for C-class flares are likely and isolated chance of
stronger M-class flares. HF users are warned for possible shortwave
fadeouts associated with the flaring. The M4.7 flare generated a
coronal mass ejection (CME) with an estimated speed of 554 km/s and a
Type II radio burst of estimated shock speed 1300 km/s. However, the
CME is propagating to the southeast with an Earth impact unlikely. The
solar winds are moderately elevated and currently near 500 km/s. These
solar winds are the possible effects of a southern hemisphere coronal
hole becoming geoeffective. Conditions for HF radio wave propagation
have improved and are now near the predicted monthly values.
