The ionospheric propagation support for High Frequency (HF) radio
communication was again unusually strong, especially for Southern
Hemisphere circuits, during 22 Nov. The ionospheric support is strong
when large plasma densities occur in the F-region ionosphere, an UV
and X-ray absorbing atmospheric region located approximately 150-400
km above the surface of the Earth. The ionospheric support this
November has been the strongest in the previous two years.
Opportunities for HF radio communication are expected to remain
exceptional in coming days, though with the usual large variations
from one day to the next. After an exciting run of M- and X-class
solar flares earlier this month, leading to some fine auroras observed
from Tasmania (https://www.facebook.com/bureauofmeteorology), the
solar activity has declined to low level eruptive C-class flares. The
3-day outlook is for low solar activity. The 3-day outlook is also for
light solar wind conditions impacting Earth, and thus quiet
geomagnetic conditions.
