[ips-sf] IPS Summary Forecast for 08 August - issued 0006UT/08-Aug-2012

rwc rwc at ips.gov.au
Wed Aug 8 10:06:54 EST 2012

Low solar flare activity, with a chance of low to moderate activity
and short-wave radio fadeouts possible from x-ray flares from sunspot
group AR1542. A shock wave (coronal mass ejection) launched 4 Aug from
a solar filament is expected to strike a glancing blow to the
geomagnetic field early on 8 Aug, causing moderate disturbances and
slight suppression of shortwave radio frequencies, but probably not
large enough for aurora sightings in Australia. The solar filament has
rotated into the position most effective for Earth effects and retains
potential for further shocks.
