SUBJ: IPS GEOMAGNETIC DISTURBANCE WARNING 02/36
ISSUED AT 22/2228Z OCTOBER 2002
BY THE AUSTRALIAN SPACE FORECAST CENTRE.

A CORONAL HOLE IS NEARING THE CENTRE OF THE
SOLAR DISK. THIS HOLE HAS A LARGE LONGITUDINAL
EXTENT WHICH MAY CAUSE AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF
MILD TO MODERATE GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY DURING
INTERVAL 26-29 OCT.

NOTE:
THE NORTH-SOUTH COMPONENT OF THE INTERPLANETARY
MAGNETIC FIELD IS CURRENTLY MILDLY NORTHWARD, A
CONDITION THAT REDUCES THE GEOEFFECTIVENESS OF
SOLAR ACTIVITY. IF THIS NORTHWARD ORIENTATION
PERSISTS THE HIGH SPEED SOLAR WIND STREAM EFFECTS
FROM THIS HOLE WILL BE REDUCED/MINIMAL.

INCREASED GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY EXPECTED
FROM 26-29 OCTOBER 2002
-------------------------------------------------------------
GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY FORECAST
26-27 Oct: unsettled to active
28-29 Oct: active, chance minor storm periods.
