Hi IPS flare alert customers,

This alert message below is obviously incorrect, input data corruption
at some stage appears to have caused the problem.

IPS FLARE ALERT - PART C
PRELIMINARY FLARE DETAILS AT END OF FLARE
ISSUE TIME: Mon Oct 27 12:28:20 UTC 2014
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Approximate Flare Start  :  27-10-2014 0900 UT
Approximate Flare Maximum: 27-10-2014 1029 UT at Flux X45500.0
Approximate Flare End    :  27-10-2014 1226 UT
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

>From the xray flux values at the time of the data corruption:
YYYY MM DD HHMM xray flux value
2014 10 27  1029   4.55e-05  (this is an M4.55 or M4.6 xray flux flare)

>From the message that went out it appears that the order of magnitude is
wrong (almost as though the plus became a plus in the floating point
notation or more likely the number was truncated and e-05 part wasnt read in),
hence the X45500.0. This means we shall have to add a test to try and reject
flux values that are obviously out of range.

Further review of data shows the correct flare maximum actually occured earlier at:
YYYY MM DD HHMM xray flux value
2014 10 27  1009   6.79e-05 (M6.8)

The alert message then should have been:

IPS FLARE ALERT - PART C

Approximate Flare End    :  27-10-2014 1226 UT

Apologies.
IPS
