They appear to be rising from the south in a curtain type origin with the spotlight type streaks heading towards the northwest from there. It is currently 2100 hours. The temperature is very cold, and there is no cloud at all - a light breeze in a star-filled sky. The lights were arcing right across the sky from South East, through South, to South West. Bands of light were also visible around 8pm going right across the sky immediately above us, white in colour and shining/fading in lozenge shapes when they were not actually joining up and covering an entire arc like the Milky Way. Rays stretched into the sky across the horizon and up to about 45 degrees from the horizon, again right around half the sky. These rays were very numerous, and grew until they almost met overhead after coming from the South East to the South West . These rays, and the arcs from which they rose, glowed white, green and pink/purple in turn. Then the pulsing lights (white) started flashing across the entire sky in true Aurora fashion - at the height of the activity they were starting from the horizon and flashing right up to the sky above us. I apologise for not staying outside and getting ALL the data - but I have to come inside when I start to shake with cold. *LOL* Where we are, on the outskirts of Geeveston (over 43 degrees south), is not affected by much light from other dwellings etc and we are quite high up, so there is a lot of sky to watch! I am sure there will be other observations lasting longer than mine, but I HAD to put mine in as well! Mostly concentrated in the West but some green activity in the East. I noticed it first at about 7:40pm and it faded out about 8:25pm. It was green and some pink from horizon upwards, with some searchlight type streaks. There is still a bit of greenish light in the East but much fainter (9:30pm). It was pretty amazing. At this time of 21.29hrs EST I have been observing from my location a very large aurora event that has begun at approximately 1930hrs, at this time no moon has risen above the eastern horizon. It has seen a massive expanse of the night sky covered with pulsating green energy lights. The eastern fringe had been of a particularly different pattern to what I have seen before but the more or less solid "mass" of green sky has now risen to over our heads at our viewing location. The observation took place wed 24 aug 05 at between 1000 to 1100 UTC (2000-2100 NSW time) from the cockpit of the aircraft I was flying on a track between Newcastle and Nowra NSW (approx. S34 E 151). Best viewing occured at higher altitude (31,000 ft) but was visible even from the ground. The curtain of light extended from a bearing of about 150 through south to about 190 degrees magnetic. The aurora in places had clear virga like curtains extending way up into the upper atmosphere. The colour was a milky white. The other pilot and passengers were impressed too. I had stated earlier that the early light show was reaching up over our heads, the large mass of light goes up past the Southern cross star formation and out slightly past the Scorpio star formation. Our map grid location for our town is 42' 48" S 147' 31" E. I am puzzled as to why the events we witness have such strong lights on the eastern fringes although the mass of green light is now receding and compacting without the huge out bursts of energy. Cheers and happy sky-watching to all Lynda Manwaring -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... They appear to be rising from the south in a curtain type origin with the spotlight type streaks heading towards the northwest from there. It is currently 2100 hours. The lights are not coloured at this time. regards Susan Styles Margate, Tasmania -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
