I began looking at sunset, but did not spot any auroral activity until 6 p.m. CST 07 Nov 04 (12:00 UT 08Nov04). At that time I saw a pillar coming up from due north, and extending about 10 degrees. The display soon became extremely active with pillars scattered from NE to NW all along the northern horizon. Arcs that went from NE to NW and passed directly overhead shined very brightly. Altair was visible at the brightest time of the overhead arc, but some of the fainter stars were not visible. Currently (02:45 UT) the northern sky is aglow with extremely bright green glow. An occasional pillar shoots up, but the activity has subsided to the bright green glow that sometimes condenses into a green arc that stays below Polaris. I am on my second roll of film. We are using 144 MHz Amateur Radio on SSB mode. Signals were noted from VK7MO in Hobart to stations as far north as VK2EMA near Dubbo NSW, the Broken Hill beacon and VK2EI at Port Macquarie as far west as VK5DK and VK5NC in Mt Gambier and VK5ZLX and VK5UBC near Adelaide. All areas were covered in between including VK1ZQR in Canberra and VK3BG near Yarrawonga. This is close to the limit on a North South path. ZL3TY in New Zealand worked a number of stations on the east coast of Australia on 50 MHz up to 2000 km which is also near the maximum distance for an East-West path The peak of the Aurora activity appeared to be around 0400 UTC, very strong signals were noted, possibly the strongest Radio Aurora heard in many years. Information is being posted on the ANVDG website at http://users.bigpond/anvdg/australian_aurora_scatter_studie.htm and this includes screen captures from Spectrogram and Spectran, showing the different effectes of the Aurora. The rays of the aurora extended toward the zenith partially obscuring the Pleiades constellation. The aurora display consisted of Homogeneous Arcs, as well as Rays and Rayed Arcs. The colors of the aurora were mostly white with a touch of faint green. There was a considerable amount of movement in the Rays themselves. We are located at Midway Point, a small town 25 kilometres East from Hobart, southern Tasmania At shortly after dusk this evening the nor-east sky which had darkened began to glow green and this glow spread across the broader horizon as the last of the sun was lost. It was very afterwards that most of the horizon had become very green. The usual pulsations of energy bursting up and over the horizon until it was directly over head began. This was the peculiar rippling effect we'd seen before. At approx. 2145 hrs, EST, there was a large surge in activity - visible due south was a huge glowing mass of energy at horizon level. This shortly began to expand and surge up and over our viewing position but the mass energy display was positioned to almost level to where the Southern Cross is to be found in the night sky. This was an enormous light display and at our viewing we could discern colour green through to amber, scarlet and other variations of red colours in depth of hues. We could turn to the west and still observe light bearing energy waves travelling back over us and when the large 'rays' of energy were like strobe lights the moving energy bands would interact with this apparently stationary mass. The apparent peak of display lasted some 15 minutes. Thanks for the aurora alerts, very well timed and accurate, Yours Faithfully Peter Taylor From anonymous at fakedomain.ips Thu Nov 11 00:31:42 2004 From: anonymous at fakedomain.ips (anonymous) Date: Wed, 10 Nov 2004 13:31:42 +0000 Subject: aurora alert Message-ID: <418E7631000033D0@fakedomain.ips Hi, Location: Woodbridge (Southern Tasmania) Temp: approx. 15 degrees celcius Time: 12.15pm Sighting: We observed satin sheets of light spreading in different directions across the sky. The lights were whitish blue and varied in shape. Some were beaming like a torch and there was as if a large torch was being pointed up to the sky and moved side to side fairly quickly. Some were shaped in a large half ring which came from the left direction from where we were looking and slowly swept over the top of us. From anon at fakedomain.ips lights were, also escaped sheets of light. Additional observations include constant light from a 270 degree radius which were stronger with brightness than other areas. I attempted to get footage on video camera, however I am not sure the camera was able to pick up the occurence as it does not like filming without some light. The whole event was breathtaking but also mysterious. I can add more to it now - the lights actually continued until at least 11.30pm, because I looked out immediately before going to bed. There was a series of "arcs" above the horizon - not just one - and from below and from within them surged "beams" of white/green light - almost like searchlight-effects. The word "coruscating", which I have never before understood properly, would seem to be the best description of the effects. "Stunning" just doesn't really cut it! I would appreciate being put on any email listing for warnings that this sort of phenomenon is possibly due. Cheers Lynda Manwaring Tasmania 7116 ----- Original Message ----- From: anonymous To: webclim at fakedomain.ips Sent: Wednesday, November 10, 2004 11:26 PM Subject: Southern Lights Attention: Ian Barnes-Keoghan: I assume I am correct in saying that the SPECTACULAR light show we watched tonight from our back garden was the Aurora Australis? The lights shimmered across the sky and formed curves on and above the horizon for over an hour from about 9.40pm. The lights shimmered literally right across the sky, from west to east and back again, forming a series of arcs after seeming to start from a central point immediately overhead, sending rays out to all parts of the sky. Because we have no large population centres nearby, the effects were easily visible - glowing silver and green. My husband has a big camera and has taken some photos tonight on long exposure - I have persuaded him to enter them in the 2005 Photo Competition. I was very amazed at the sudden drop in temperature at the same time as the Aurora - it went from quite mild to almost frosty within a matter of half an hour. I can only remember seeing this phenomenon once before, as a child in Sydney - out in the (then thinly populated) south-west suburbs. I do not remember the Aurora as being anything like so spectacular as tonight's effort. With a bit of luck, I may see it again now that we live down here in the 40's!
