Most of it was out of sight over the horizon, but we could see reflections off the clouds which produced an unusual if not freakish effect. There were also occasional red, green and white search lights shooting vertically up over the horizon and waves of light moving horizontally - fantastic!!! The moon was rising and did not appear to deminish the light show. I have attached 3 photos although I have 30 different phases of colour from green to purple. More details are available if you are interested. We also photographed a red aurora in Jindabyne last year and have plenty of photos of thr all night event.
