From anonymous at fakedomain.ips Wed Mar 21 08:00:16 2001 From: anonymous at fakedomain.ips (anonymous) Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 08:00:16 +1100 Subject: Report of Aurora Observation Message-ID: Dear Sirs, I am forwarding this to you of a sighting yesterday morning. The sighting was from about half way between Ballan and Gordon (near Ballarat) at an elevation of 530 m. My home address features extremely clear skies, usually, and I always look for aurora's having spotted a really fantastic one last year (which I reported to you). I would have sent it yesterday (from work where I had your contact details) but the car's clutch cable broke! Message, originally to a colleague at work, follows ... Rick, There was an aurora this morning visible quite brightly from 6:00 (or earlier?) to about 6:15. It faded out by about 6:20. I rang up the ABC and they announced it, but they actually had to wait for the early morning edition of AM, then the weather and by the time they actually did announce it ~6:18, it had largely become very difficult to see. It was a little bit more visible at about 6:20 - 6:22, but then disappeared in the increasing ambient light. I would have called you, but I was outside looking at it and I haven't dialled in your 'phone no's into my mobile. It wasn't very pretty at all; really just moving sheets of white to the slightest tinge of pink with varying brightness filaments in them which moved about, within the sheets, too. Covered the sky from virtually the horizon (mostly) to about 30 degrees elevation. In the South, but wandered perhaps 15 to 20 degrees more or less about South I suppose, perhaps a little more South East. Sometimes there was just 1 sheet and sometimes perhaps three sheets were visible, but I could not see any of the classic folds like I have seen many years ago and of aurora in pictures. Have seen auroras up here since 1952. Last night's was surely one of the tops. colors in blood red, blue, bluegreen, yellows, yellow'greens, greys. Vibrant, so light you could not see stars at times. Multi ribbons cascading east/west, horizon to horizon, and at times spectacular action in every direction. One of the most "splendiferous" performances i have ever seen. Best from about ll pm to 3 am, with strongest performance of all between ll and l am. What a show!!!!!!!! wish you were here!!!!!! Love, margie. . I think these occurred so strongly because my camera batteries all were dead ... wouldn't you know it!!!!! PS ... am watching for lights tonight ... at about 10 pm, Tuesday say some on the northern horizon. light ones overhead hardly noticeable at about midnight. nothing since. will keep you posted ... hoping for repeat performance tonight when i have the batteries in good shape!!!! lol. love, margie. I live in Keweenaw County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula just outside of Calumet. Apparently, it was nearly over by the time I saw it as it was not a real good display, but significant. Message-ID: <3AC5CC77.16788707@fakedomain.ips Hi, I received your email Aurora alerts today and you were right on the button. >From anon at fakedomain.ips moonlight and not good dark seeing (Large Magellanic Cloud just visible) I saw auroral elements on three occasions. The first was what looked like the top of 5577A rays in a SSE direction at about 10 degres alt, a bit before 8pm, Saturday March 31. These faded quickly. They were about IBC2 because the color was marginal. A large reddish patch with a bit of vertical structure appeared around 8.15, due west (!!) between 5 and 20 degrees altitude Definitely 6300A, IBC2-3. Also clearly seen by my sister who was in a darker location south of Canberra. Third observation, a distinct formless red (6300A) glow slightly east of due south, rising to an altitude of about 20 degrees from the southerly horizon (of which abt 3 degrees was obscured from my location) Time, 9.10pm to about 9.20pm EST. Not the most dazzling display I've ever seen (how about an overhead Corona bright enough to read by?) but not bad for Canberra in the city lights. Call me on or email me (here or at ) if you need any more details.
