It was in the northern sky, spanning in columns jutting upward into the sky from the northern horizon from the east to the west. As the dawn lightened, it became more intense in the western end. Throughout the time we observed it, it would brighten and fade, being continually present, with some subtle colorations of light red in parts of it. It was visible until almost sun up. With the meteor shower occurring at the same time, it was amazing to observe meteors in/through the aurora! The aurora was visible as a dim (greenish) curtain with some faint rays. The aurora was visible from at least 0953z until first light of sunrise interfered with its visibility. I am an ASOS weather observer for the FAA's ASOS station at Lubbock International Airport; and was the observer on duty during the event. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The activity lasted from 20:15 AEST to approx. 1am - 2am the following morning. Surprisingly reception came from a bearing of approx. 120 degress rather than 180 degress. FM Stations were noted from Shepparton, Traralgon, Bendigo & Albury/Wodonga VIC. Thank You. Cheers Geoff. _______________________________________________________ Get 100% private, FREE email for life from Excite Australia Visit http://inbox.excite/ From anonymous at fakedomain.ips Sun Aug 13 11:03:30 2000 From: anonymous at fakedomain.ips (anonymous) Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 21:03:30 -0400 Subject: Aurora Message-ID: I would like to let you know that I observed a very nice Visual aurora from an arc of 330 degrees thru 0 degrees to about 30 degrees on the morning of August 12th ,2000.at 4:15 am EDT. My location is Port Clinton , Ohio 43452 LL 41 30 30 N by 82 50 30 W. The arc of lights were white and the shot up into the sky at varies altitudes and were wispy in nature. As a ham radio operator I was also hearing the Familiar "BUZZ" on the signals on 50 MHz beacons .I continued to see the AU until the sun started to come up at about 5:30 am 73's WA8WZG 6mtrs - 47 GHZ from EN81om http://wa8wzg From anonymous at fakedomain.ips Sun Aug 13 12:13:41 2000 From: anonymous at fakedomain.ips (anonymous) Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 22:13:41 EDT Subject: northern lights Message-ID: I live in Kenosha Wis. and last night my husband and I decided we would set our alarm for 3:00am so we could look for meteors /shooting stars since we had heard it was going to be a good night for them. Imagine our delight to witness the Northern Lights as well, it was the most fantastic thing we had ever seen. There simply is no other way to discribe what we saw. We watched for a good 30 min. and spotted 10 shooting stars, but the northern lights were a great bonus and worth getting up for. Message-ID: I am writing to find out what exactly my boyfriend and I saw at 4-5am on Aug. 12. It look like the aurora borealis was coming together over our heads here in Waterloo, ON, Canada. There were also around 30 or more "shooting stars" within our line of sight. The reason I say a. borealis is because the fluctuating clouds were coloured green at some instances. The clouds looked like the reflection of light off a low wave on a pond with the same rippling effect as though they were moving towards a point above our heads. If you could explain this phenomenon to my satisfaction it would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time. ---------------------- Honours Science, University of Waterloo ---------------------- From anonymous at fakedomain.ips Sat Aug 12 20:08:26 2000 From: anonymous at fakedomain.ips (anonymous) Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 06:08:26 -0400 Subject: AURORA REPORT 2000-003 Message-ID: AURORA REPORT 2000-003 Z TIME : SAME AS GMT / UTC 12//1000Z AUG 00 FM: MR. Activity at the Zenith was extreme - appearing much like a huge "eye" with streamers forming the upper and lower eyelids. Very phenomenal. Greatest activity appeared to be at 4:00 AM EST when the Zenith became active. The activity extended below 44 degrees appearing to reach even 43 degrees or more southward. Thanks for your warning - we were looking. No red colours nor blue but heavy green and extreme activity at the zenith. Curtain aurora to the north and spikes from east to west. The activity migrated southward well below 45 degrees latitude.
